V/A - Smash The State Vol.1 1994

Oi, now we move over the ocean and visit Canada and find this little sunshine called Smash The State Vol.1. And this compilation has it all. Eighteen early canadian punk smash hits and they just fits everything: brilliant bands with superior songs. Much much better than the second album for my taste. Get and celebrate this early Canadian punk album. It exists a book with the same title with lots of pretty details of any Canadian vinyl release from 1977 up to 1992. I never read it but I think it's worth buying.

THE SPY'S - Original Punk Rock From Canada 1979-1980

Damn cool release by Incognito Records and we meet the Spy's from Windsor/Ontario which only made an EP in 1980 and this is one of those records with lost recordings that a stubborn lover discoveredInfo found: The whole of the American Midwest, including Detroit, was a bit slow to latch onto punk. By 1979, though, a handful of bars there, like Lili's 21 in Hamtramck, the New Miami in the seedy Cass Corridor neighbourhood and the legendary Bookies up in the equally menacing north side, were showing local and visiting acts at least a few nights each week. And for a couple of teenagers from Windsor just across the river, that was all that was needed to start up a band like The Spy's. As singer Frank Carlone remembers it, "Elad (D'Amore) and I were at the New Miami to see Fred 'Sonic' Smith, and somehow Elad had managed to chat with him between sets. So later in the next set, he calls Elad up to the stage to jam with him, and for two guys who grew up listening to the Stooges and the MC5 this was amazing. Anyway, I think it was during 'Sweet Little Sixteen', Sonic gives him the nod, and Elad does this amazing solo, and I knew we had to start a band or something!"

Carlone and D'Amore's musical partnership goes back even farther. "Way back in '73 up to around '75, a bunch of us east-siders would hold these sort of informal battle of the bands in various basements - we called it 'Cockstock' - constantly trying to outdo each other. One time Elad and his brother, Domenic, filled these containers with gasoline," he laughs, "hoping to have these Kiss-style firebombs and, poooof!, we just about burned the house down!" After witnessing the Dry Heaves score a surprise second-place finish at a real Battle of the Bands, this time in 1979 at Ojibway Park, the pair got serious, coaxing bassist 'Coma' Joe Desrameaux into the fold. Filling things out on drums was Dave O'Gorman ("He had a small business, Paramount Fruit on Ouellette, and he was really good at getting us gigs'), and by the late summer of 1979 The Spy's were about ready to rock. What followed over the next twelve months became the stuff of local legend. The band got their first gig at Windsor's Drop-In Tavern, a place known more for heavy dinosaur rock than for punk. ("I think a tomato or egg got thrown at us, so I thought, 'Hey, we're doing something right'.") More shows followed, including a spot in support of Toronto's Battered Wives at the Masonic Temple the following year.

By the time the band went down to Salem Studios in Leamington to record a couple of tracks for a single, they had gelled into a taut act with their own loyal army of fans. Alas, with such crowd pleasers as 'Welcome to the Cruel World' and 'I Wanna Be Like You' packing the dance floors, the lads demurred somewhat on their choice of songs, going with two newer ones instead, 'Underground' and the snappy 'Machine Shop'. And despite the muffled sound ("It wasn't mastered right. It should've been more, like, raucous"), 'Underground' / 'Machine Shop' has managed a following all its own in the punk world, appearing on Smash The State Vol.2 in 1994. V/A - Killed By Death #26 1996

You know with a KBD Sampler you can't do nothing wrong, right? # 26 is a collectionn of early canadian punk from 1977 - 80. Unfortunately, this is one of the harder KBD's to find. It's also one of the best! Much of what is on here is already well known. D.O.A. (two live cuts), The Action & Viletones along with one Forgotten Rebels (Angry) are pretty. Even with the three Smash The State volumes covering a lot of the lesser known bands, a better effort than this could have been put forth. Once more a fine limited (1000 copies) Compilation from the series which I highly appreciate. Brand new and also great Bloodstains Across Canada with more rare Canada stuff.

1.Nazi Training Camp - D.O.A.
2.TV's On The Blink - THE ACTION
3.Danger Boy - THE VILETONES
4.Backdoor To Hell - THE VILETONES
5.To Have Some Fun - THE UGLY
6.Shoeshine Boy - THE CURSE
7.Killer Bees - THE CURSE
8.Angry - FORGOTTEN REBELS
9.National Unity - FORGOTTEN REBELS
10.What Do You Want Me To Do? - POINTED STICKS
11.Love Is Shit (It's Goodbye) - DISHRAGS
12.Steppin' Stone - CARDBOARD BRAINS

TDK & PBNSK - Split EP 1984

Before I watch the soccer match SGE vs. Schalke 04 a quick post by two combos from the Iberian Peninsula, released via π Musikra RecordsFirst PBNSK (Bakery Pastries Our Lady of Karmen) and TDK (Terrorism, Destruction & Kaos), both from Madrid and pioneers of hardcore punk in Spain. The A-side starts with P.B.N.S.K. and their two songs. These two are the only known songs released by them. Little else is known about the group, beyond its pioneering state in punk and hardcore. Its membership was Lanaquera Paco, who later became part of TDK replacing Manolo Uvi. The original lineup constituted: Oscar Lanaquera (voice), Lolo Lacruz (guitar), Paco Lanaquera (bass) and Paco Cameros (drums).
The vocalist on this record was, however, Manolo "Masacre" (alias "Fan Del Caos"). Other group members were once Pepe Arriols (Pepe Punk) and Toni, who were also part of the group III Guerra Mundial. The B side contains two issues by TDK, "Israel" and "Interrogation". Both songs appeared on later albums of the band. TDK was formed in 1984 after the separation of Espasmódicos, José Siemens, Magüu Plarte and Alfonso Cronopio. They recorded a demo in the studio of Felix Arribas (Pekenikes) and in 1985 the first 12'' Esto Es Una Empresa Capitalista which is a fantastic record. Four albums followed, lots of 7inch and after the release of the 4th album the band broke up in 1989. The split was released in 1984 and was reissued in 2005 by Radikal 1977 Records.
Just listen to this splendid furious smash in your face attack!!

V/A - Smash The State Vol.2 1994

New month and I have a request on this one: one more excellent compilation with old material. This record includes six great Canadian bands and I think that each of their 7''or EP they have released by small labels or self-produced are here included. Here again by No Exit Records lovingly collected and republished in the mid 90's. There exist three compilations in this series and the other ones are also highly recommended (for example: Vol.1). We have to hear eighteen punk rock classics in the proven KBD quality (whatever that may mean, haha....). Indispensable and a must for every punk rocker out there! If you interested on Volume 3 leave a feedback in the comment section. Cheers!!!

ANGRY SAMOANS - The 90's Suck & So Do You 1998

Back from the dead, the Angry Samoans with new line-up, Metal Mike (vocals/guitar), Alison (guitar/bass), Tony & Julia (bass), Bill (drums) and this is their first studio album since 1988 on Triple X/Bad Trip Records with eight songs in thirteen minutes. Well, it's no smash like their Eighties recordings, but if you're a friend of the Angrys you'll love this slab, as I do... appropriate to the emotional state of the nation. I guess I'll lie down again so I don't miss the match versus Dortmund later. Good night!
