MISFITS - Static Age 1997

October says goodbye, and which band is particularly suitable, exactly: The Misfits. I was absolutely of the opinion that I already posted this slab, but I couldn't find it in the search function, which has nothing to say, but obviously I suffer from Alzheimer. Egal, fact is: Static Age is an important and influential masterpiece, recorded in 1978, with seventeen melodic superb numbers for me almost the best songs that they ever written. Although it was the first entirety album the band ever recorded, it was not released until 1997. Numerous positive reviews can be found, and I would like to quote the following here:

"Recorded thanks to some studio time received in exchange for giving up an early label name claimed by another company, though unreleased in its original form until its appearance on Box Set, Static Age shows that early on the Misfits' particular vision was strong enough to last over a full-vinyl set. "Full" being relative, admittedly; like the band's other few full-length efforts, Static Age barely cracks the half-hour mark, packing in seventeen songs (plus a brief crackle of, naturally, static at the start and finish). Everyone in the band as they stood at the time just smokes; the recording quality is raw and strong, and those qualities which helped the Misfits stand out from the pack, especially Danzig's amazing singing and Franche Coma's fierce guitar takes on the singer's melodies, are on fine display. There's a fair amount of clangor and mess, to be sure, but it all sounds perfectly intentional, capturing a blend of punk mess, horror theatrics, and wicked humor that was theirs alone. Classics abound: "TV Casualty," with its blatant I Love Lucy end sample, the ridiculously entertaining sex fantasy "Teenagers From Mars," the perfectly pissed off "Attitude," and the crashed thrashers "We Are 138" and "Return Of The Fly." Then there's the brilliant "Last Caress", cartoon criminal punk idiocy turned into singalong madness later made famous by Misfits fanatics Metallica. Given how many tracks slipped out here and there over time on the various overlapping compilations, hardcore fans will find this a bit redundant in the end, but newcomers to the group will find this essential. Discographical matters got even more confused in later years when Static Age was issued as a stand-alone effort with three more songs appended from the sessions, including "Spinal Remains" and a re-recording of "She." (Ned Raggett, AllMusic)

MISFITS - Earth A.D./Wolfsblood 1983

Last Night I had a sleepless one, too much confusion, too many thoughts I can't handle so I choose a record which helps a lot. Can't tell why all this trouble's in my head but I'm always seemingly disillusioned, disappointed. I guess, I got a bang. Scheiß Drauf! So that's the reason I can't go to work today and you'll see what album I post now and it's superfluous to say something about this brilliant band. The Misfits are an American punk rock band often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk rock and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey by singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, the group had a fluctuating lineup during its first six years, with Danzig and bassist Jerry Only as the only consistent members. During this time they released several EPs and singles, and with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement. The Misfits disbanded in 1983 and Danzig went on to form Samhain. I love them because this is the sound I like, short, rough, dirty and wild and I have all their records of the Danzig era. Earth A.D. is the second album and it's by far the hardest. Kiss were far as I know the first who paint itself, the Misfits make even partial and thus differ significantly from the others and it works, yeah! I have the German licensed edition of Aggressive RockProduktionen with silver labels.You can get more audio samples on kbdrecords, there are some of their early 7Inches. I must now eat something, I neglected too much. Enjoy the record!

V/A - Children In Heat 1996

A really worth listening is this Misfits tribute compilation with swedish and german bands and they record a wonderful song selection and they sound almost like the real classics of the Misfits, sometimes here & there a little bit different but Ithink this is the sense of cover songs. Rocks quite cool this album. I remember, I bought the LP at a concert from Turbostaat in the Rote Flora 1998 in Hamburg and I know for certain because that time I was deep in love (jajaja...it's long time ago but that's another sad story) - The record is limited to 666 copies, hand numbered and thirteen songs on it and every Misfits friend should try a listen.

MISFITS - Live In Detroit 1983

Oh No not another Misfits bootleg .... oh yes!! This is a broadcast recording in an acceptable sound quality I would say. Twenty-two horrorpunk nuggets and this record was released in an edition of 500 copies by Radio X in 2016. They bring the gig decently into your room and of course they are more dynamic on Konserve, example Earth A.D./Wolfsblood. I think, a good start for February and this slab will quickly warm you up.

SAMHAIN - Unholy Passion 12'' 1985

Actually, I wanted to post a compilation but now this music is running and that kicks. Samhain was formed by Mr. Danzig in 1983, immediately following his departure from the Misfits. Enough words in the net and this 12'' on Plan 9, their second release, is for me the best record.

VOODOO LOVECATS - Thats What I Believe EP 1997

Combining facets of glam and punk rock, and mixing them with a horror-based image, that's the Voodoo Lovecats, originally formed back 1994 in Melbourne, they threw out a few demos, smashed a few stages, then launched their debut CD Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (Horror Show Records) in 1997. The band followed up with a split CD El Noche De El Siniestro Vudu in 1998 and toured extensively (supporting international bands like The Misfits in '97, Suicidal Tendencies, etc..) around Australia. A few lineup changes in 1998 caused the band to take a "break", which turned into a longer-than-expected hiatus. Sicboy (vocals), Ruin (lead guitar), and Creep (drums) have rehearsed and are working towards recording some classic VLC tunes (that never made it into the studio) for their fans but they are reformed now. A short review here: "...they are a fantastic ROCK unit, the kind that actually gets you excited about things again, then the joke's all on you. Maybe I'll eat my words on all of this...but for now, at this moment in time, the Voodoo Lovecats are the best thing I've seen in a dog's age..." Year Zero/Resistant Harmony Review, 1997.

V/A - A Small Retrosperspective (Live!) 2019

Ein neues Produkt aus dem Hause WDM Records und da April ausschließlich Live Postis gewidmet ist wuchs die Idee einer superben compilation mit solchen Aufnahmen die ich hier und da fand oder auf meiner Festplatte schlummerten. Bevorzugt mit Bands die ich teilweise erlebt habe und ich besonders gern auflege. Ich glaube das Ergebnis kann sich hören und sehen lassen und besonders das Artwork alter Eintrittskarten schwirrte mir seit langem im Kopf herum, das hat eine Menge fantastischer Erinnerungen hervor gerufen, schön war's! Ich wünsche Euch jetzt abwechslungsreichen Hörgenuß mit diesem kleinen Rückblick.

    A new product from WDM Records and because April is dedicated to Live posts grew the idea of a superb compilation with recordings that I found here and there or slumbered on my hard disk. Preferably with bands that I have partially experienced and I often put on my turntable. I think the result can be heard and seen, and especially the artwork of old tickets has been buzzing in my mind for a long time, it has brought back a lot of fantastic memories, it was nice! I wish you a varied listening pleasure with this small retrosperspective.

The negative title of this rare compilation might some irritate but on it are only cool tracks. OK, a few a pretty crude and unpolished and I must laugh when I hear the lyrics but this is quite funny. The Slogan here is FUN!!! and Ziegenkopf Records is the predestined label for this...worldwide!!!. I think the songs are partly unpublished and some bands have released only on here. Mostly German bands, a healthy mix of Oi! and punk stuff, some live recordings. My favourites are Pöbel & Gesocks (classic Misfits cover of We Are 138), F.B.I., Daddy Memphis (always funny!!), Schultenbräute (all-girl band), Nothing But Puke and Genosse Rudi. So this record is definitely a must-have and a must-listen for any good punk rock maniac.

V/A - USA 1981 [2019]

Friends, March is rolling in and let's heat up the freezing temperatures with the following slab, which ranks among the best I've heard in a long time. It's good to see, things are happening again on the KBD / Bloodstains front and the detectives have outdone themselves with this compilation and I can recommend you the purchase without hesitation, but you have to be quick, it's "limited to 300 copies and then no more!" Nineteen bands, twenty-two rare songs and one cracker chases the other. The artwork is more colorful than what we know from the classics, but liner-notes to the bands or other infos have been saved (only all 7Inch covers on the back), too bad... two points deducted in the B-note. But that's a mosquito fartz in view of this brilliant record, because as it says here: "Why pay $500 to some gold digger for a 7Inch when you can get the whole package here?" Think about it!!

GENETIKS - @ Waggon/Offenbach 15.11.2012

Every year comes not only the Christ child. No!, but also the fabulous Genetiks from Nuremberg. And since this is so, one must in the best location in the Rhine-Main area is in my calendar every year. On November 15, 2012 a joyous evening was announced in the Waggon (Offenbach) again because the German wave-punks from Franconia played the last gig of their successful "Mommy, Can I Go Out & Tour Tonight?" Tour. In a good Misfits tradition the four boarded the stage and ensured with their enthusiasm and charm for warm temperatures at every visitor (I remember it was a damn cold autumn evening). The song selection provided an excellent cross-section of their three albums and the sound was pretty loud and sometimes chaotic. The cozy Waggon atmosphere is magic. It's as when the concert is in your own living room and at any moment could be the neighbor with the cops at the door and they get puked in the face, as always. And this great feeling is what distinguishes the Waggon and I like being there. A true gem of our subculture. I think for every band which play there is this something special and the recordings here confirm this. The Genetiks played a fantastic concert and gave us once again a memorable evening. The sound qualitiy is again superb and an impulsive 80s punk rock with electric elements from 2011 is posted here. Let the band know what you think and get in touch: Genetiks or MySpace or fakebook. If your band like to play in the Waggon too or you're wanna enjoy a nice evening then visit the Blog or MySpace. Appendix: I'm not quite sure but I think the band has dissolved... would be a pity. ED GEIN'S CAR - Brain Dead Baby EP 1984

Debut EP by this Brooklyn four piece called Ed Gein's Car (named in tribute to the notorious serial killer) and the line-up consisted of Scot (vocals), Tim (guitars), Eric (bass), Fred (drums). The band was active 1982-1987 and in that time they made three albums (two of them live at CBGB) and three singles. A review: "Excellent, powerful ’77-style punk in a Misfits/Undead vein. The title track is instantly memorable for its sickoid lyrics and preeminently catchy instrumentals, but the other two songs here keep up the standard just as well. My opinion: get this EP as soon as humanly possible." (Steve Spinali, MRR #19 • November 1984) - They quickly became a popular attraction on the downtown club scene, and were firm favorites at CBGB, where they recorded the 1987 live effort "You Light Up My Liver". However, the group took success with the same lack of seriousness as they approached every other facet of their career, and disbanded at the peak of their popularity in 1987; Weis later joined Iron Prostate before turning to painting. V/A - Let's Die 1985

Einen habe ich noch für Euch heute und diese compilation wurde vom legendären California based label Mystic Records released and we have sixteen times cool Deathrock at its finest. A really excellent selection of songs come from largely unknown bands, some of which only made it onto this slab. On the one hand, that may be due to the time, in the mid-80s this genre was rather new (don't think about the Misfits) and merged later into what we call gothic rock today, that's how I think. And everybody who has been to a black night disco will agree with me. On the other hand, I suspect little money for further studio sessions, negative label replys or different conflicts within the bands. Egal, was sich hier tummelt ist exzellent und für Mitte der 80ziger sehr anständig. Vorab würde ich Dance With Me von T.S.O.L. empfehlen, you will be in good hands.

E.A.T.E.R. - Doomsday Troops EP 1983

Ernst And The Edsholm Rebels – E.A.T.E.R. were formed in the summer of 1982 in Grums/Kil, Värmland, Sweden by Mikael “Gröten” Karlsson (guit/vox), Anders Brännström (bass), Peter “Pelle” Forsman (drums) and Hans “Hasse” Dahlgren (vox). and this first line-up of E.A.T.E.R. recorded Chaos Cassette vol.1 which was realesed in the fall of 1982. A number of gigs were played by this first line-up, among them the chaotic and by media well documented gig at Segmons Folkets hus in february of 1983. By the release of the bands debut EP Doomsday Troops (Ernst Records) Hasse was replaced by Mikael “Micke” Larsson as the leadsinger. Micke had earlier played in Psykjouren together with infamous and by now nationwidely known Buddha. Doomsday Troops EP was recorded and produced In KAAS by the band & Micke Blomqvist, and released in the summer of 1983. The record was sold all over the world, and E.A.T.E.R. recived recognition from people like Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys and Pushead, the artist that made Metallicas and the Misfits cartoons. With the new line-up and a sucessfull record-realese the band went on the road and toured Sweden. A review: "Not to be confused with the '77 U.K. punk band Eater, this Swedish group (Ernst And The Edsholm Rebels) floor down on the acceleration and rapidly hit fast, lightning doses of 1000-m.p.h. thrash mayhem. An outrageous display of burning speed and mind-boggling turbulence, combined with chaotic chops of lyrical expression. Don't be fooled by the hilarious intro to the title cut--this EP hauls its load fast and furious in the new Swedish tradition." - Pushead (from Maximum Rock'n'Roll #13, April/May 1984) - The band is still active and I recommend this five piece of classic swedish hardcore tunes and the compilations Really Fast #1 and Killed By Hardcore #2.

ARSON - White Folks 7'' 1979

Five piece from Toronto hereby invite you to listen to their only great & rare 7Inch on Motor Records, which was released in a limited edition of 900 copies, and since I can't talk about the How’s, Why’s and Wherefore’s, because I wasn’t there at the time, I found a small but shiny & informative anecdote from someone who knows better, here we go: In 1977, at the height of the punk rock pandemic that was effortlessly engulfing the globe, vocalist and composer Rude Tuesdai fortuitously joined forces with guitarist Marcel Lafleur to begin a musical friendship that has spanned more than three and a half decades and spawned the incendiary band ARSON, the rest of the gang were Chic (guitars), Spyke (bass), Mike (drums). Ask anyone who’s ever heard them live and they’ll tell you that ARSON sonically sutures the Detroit destruction of the Stooges and MC5; the New York noise of the Velvet Underground and New York Dolls; and the British brainpower of the Stranglers and Clash. I could go on, so I will. Arson has independently toured all across North America and played countless concerts in a myriad of notorious rock’n’roll breeding grounds like New York, Detroit, and Chicago while sharing stages with (and stealing spotlights from) much influential legendary luminaries as the Dead Boys, Misfits, Suicide, Troggs, Destroy All Monsters, etc…. Meanwhile, Rude and Martin continued to douse the band’s smoldering ashes with new songs until the time was right to finally tap their past and craft a contemporary sound containing the unflinching fury of their earlier incarnation.

Aided and abetted by John Sutton (Weakerthans) on bass and David Quinton (Mods, Dead Boys, Stiv Bators) on drums, Arson recently recorded an in depth profile for Toronto radio station CIUT while recent concerts have garnered a whole new generation of rave reviews. That not hyperbole, that’s a fact and you can take it from me because I actually was there back in 1977 at the height of the punk rock heyday. So who you gonna believe: me or your own ears? PARASITES - Last Caress 7'' 1991

Well, there are songs which are predestined for cover versions and you really make nothing wrong with that and a perfect example is 'Last Caress' from the Misfits. Many bands use this goodie and I have not heard a bad one and the Parasites played a few (remember their En Homage Aux Beatles EP). Released via Shredder came this green sleeve version out in a total of 2845 copies on orange marbled vinyl. The flip is a demo of 'Fool For You'. Nice one!

THE BLITZKRIEG BOYS - Back From Nowhere 1989

The Blitzkrieg Boys was formed 1985 in Tampere, when Marty Blitzkrieg (vox) got an idea to form a band that would be a mixture of the Ramones, Cockney Rejects and the Misfits. Soon he found Gil (guitars), Kukka (bass) and Jussi (drums), excatly the right guys to play this kind of music. In 1988 they relelased their first record in form of an EP on Raktor Records with seven melodic punkies. I bought that in 1989 at a gig in the Marquee in Hamburg when Broken Toys and the Schwarzen Schafe toured through Germany. I was instantly elated. After a period without Punkrock I came in the mid 90s in touch with their only album which was released on the German label Teenage Rebel Records in December 1989 (1000 copies, 225 in orange vinyl and the rest black). The production is bit cleaner (which is almost too much) than the EP but I love the ramonesque style and they make it perfect as well. In 2011 the Finnish label Woimasointu released an album called 'Too Old To Die Young' but I have not yet heard it. All Right, enjoy the Blitzkrieg Boys and a nice weekend!

NEGATIVE GAIN - Back From The Dead 1986

Before I enjoy myself with soccer tonight this Killer debut album by Negative Gain from Toronto. A short Band History (by Grant Slavin): Negative Gain was founded in Toronto, Ontario by Peter Warner who wrote all of the lyrics and provided rehearsal space in his basement. Filling out the lineup was Grant C. Slavin on guitar, Steve Currie on bass, and Andrew Mosely on drums. All members were in their mid-teens at the time. Their influences included Minor Threat, Millions Of Dead Cops, the Misfits, and the Dead Kennedys, as well as local TO bands Direct Action and Sudden Impact. Negative Gain got their first break in '83 when we were asked by local Toronto promoter Jill Heath to open for Jodie Fosters Army at the city's legendary punk club The Turning Point. After the show Pete and Grant went skateboarding with JFA. The evening was documented in a subsequent issue of Thrasher as JFA's guitarist Don Pendelton was writing a column for the rag documenting their tour. Other memorable Negative Gain gigs around this time include warming up for bands like the Circle Jerks, Gang Green, the Descendents and 7 Seconds. The young thrash band soon went from listening to their favorite bands' records on a daily basis to hanging out with them backstage and stealing their beer rider! More help from Jill Heath came when the promoter sent Negative Gain's 1985 demo tape, Attack Of The Killer Bears, to Pushead for review. Pushead evidently like the tape so much that he offered to release a full-length LP for the band on his Pusmort label. Negative Gain recorded their album in Oakville, Ontario in about five hours on a Saturday afternoon, as studio time was limited to what the young band could afford to spend on the recording. The session was produced by Brian Taylor of the Toronto band Youth Youth Youth.

Sadly, Pete Warner committed suicide not too long after the recording was completed, and never lived to see its release. His last gig with the band was with Toronto's Bunchofuckingoofs. Negative Gain continued on as a three-piece for about two more years, before splitting in the late 1980s.

KAKA DE LUXE - Las Canciones Malditas 1983

From the cold north to sunny south, back to November 1977, a group of young misfits, calling itself the lightweight of the pin, which ranged from futuristic comic fanzines making, decided to form a band, inspired by the newborn London punk storm. Kaka De Luxe was founded in Madrid and were Fernando Marquez (Lefty), Manolo Campoamor, Carlos Berlanga (Dario Castro), Enrique Sierra (Sir Henry), Olvido Gara (Alaska), Nacho Canut (zinc Alloy) and Pablo Martinez. No member knew just sing or play, but wasted energy and provocation in some letters that passed censorship difficult time. They recorded an s/t EP in 1978 and in 1983 appeared, when the group had been dissolved, this album with the 'damn songs' which contained their first demos. Kaka de Luxe was very active and is one of the most important bands of the Madrid scene!
